Short novellas that can easily be read in just a short amount of time, they are sure to be pleasing to suspense fans. I had read only three of these authors before, Mary Alford, Ruth Logan Herne and Loree Lough, but thoroughly enjoyed the offerings by others. The one by Elizabeth Ludwig was especially suspenseful. Book Review: ‘A Vow of Justice’ by Lynette Eason

About The Book:

FBI Special Agent Lincoln St. John is living his own personal nightmare. What he never expected was to find Allison very much alive shortly after her “murder.” As his anger and hurt mix with relief, Linc isn’t sure how he’s supposed to feel. One thing he does know for sure: he and Allison will have to work together to stop a killer before she dies a second time–this time for good.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lynette Eason closes out her Blue Justice series with a story that will have you tearing through the pages to get to the stunning conclusion.

My Rating: 5 Stars

‘At the door he stood to the side, then kicked it in. And came face to face with a dead woman.’

Lynette Eason has completely outdone herself with this offering in her crazy good ‘Blue Justice’ series.
Linc St. John, an FBI Special Agent is totally stunned and devastated to discover that Allie Radcliffe, the woman he dearly loves, has been killed in an explosion. Things, however, are not always what they seem, and Linc must find a way to cope with what is happening now. Allie and Linc will now have to work fast, hard and dangerously to stop a determined killer before one of them ends up dead for real.

Eason hits the ground running with this one and the action does not let up one little tiny bit throughout the book. Russian mobsters, tracking devices that don’t quit, one injury after another, not knowing who to trust, these are the things which make this book good. Besides, the great writing, of course. I was completely captivated and could not wait to finish! And the ending…..ahhhh, Eason ties it up beautifully. In my opinion, this is her best book ever! I highly recommend this one, folks. Don’t miss it.

Book Review: ‘A Glitter of Gold’ by Liz Johnson

About The Book:

Anne Norris moved to Savannah, Georgia, for a fresh start. Now her pirate-tour business is flagging, and paying the rent requires more than wishful thinking. When she discovers evidence of a shipwreck off the coast of Tybee Island, she knows it could be just the boon she needs to stay afloat. She takes her findings to local museum director Carter Hale for confirmation, but she runs after a disastrous first meeting.

Carter has been searching for the location of the wreck detailed in the worn pages of an 18th-century diary, the discovery of which could open the door to his dream job at a prestigious museum. But convincing Anne to help him fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle is no easy task. And working with Carter means that Anne will have to do the one thing she swore she’d never do again: trust a man.

Finding a monetary backer and sticking with a search that’s turning up nothing will take all their dedication–and every secret they’ve tried to hide. If they can find the lost ship, they may discover a treasure worth more than all the pirate gold in the world–love.

‘You’re a child of God and that’s all you have to be. That’s enough.’

Anne Norris is hiding from her past, her life shaded with shame; shame God doesn’t see. Barely existing, Anne discovers a treasure on the beach after a devastating hurricane on the Georgia coast. Taking it to a museum, she meets Carter Hale, who is also running from his past. If Anne works with Carter to discover what this artifact is, she’ll have to trust a man, something she has vowed never to do again.

Full of history, a touch of the pirate, along with a 250 year old mystery, this book was just so fulfilling to read. Add in excerpts from a diary that old as well, and your heart becomes engaged early on. A treasure hunt, sprinkled with a sweet romance and a dual time also thrown in, this one is another gem to add to Johnson’s books. (pun intended) I loved it very much and highly recommend it to one and all. Well done!

Book Review: ‘Underestimating Miss Cecilia’ by Carolyn Miller

About The Book:

Will a shrinking violet and a prodigal son come together to better their world?

Cecilia Hatherleigh has many secrets in her shy, sweet heart–but none bigger than her unrequited love for Edward Amherst, the earl’s son next door. Her love has persevered over many years, even when he grows to be a bit of a rake. Yet despite his fondness for females, he never seems to see her as anything more than the quiet younger sister, and nothing Cecy does has changed that. Rather than pining after his perhaps unworthy love, she decides to turn her focus toward living out her newfound faith. Now she’s determined to follow God’s leading to make a better world for the poor and dispossessed around her.

A London riot awakens Edward to the responsibilities due his family name. It’s time to turn his life around to please his noble father–and that means restoring his abandoned legal career and making a marriage of convenience. Neither will be easy, given his past and the prejudices of the upper echelons of society to which he belongs.

When misadventure strikes at a house party, these two are thrown together even as their lives are upended. If Cecy can’t trust God, overcome her shyness, and find her inner strength, the good work they’ve both done may be for naught-and neither will ever find true love . . .

About Carolyn Miller

Hi, I’m Carolyn Miller, author of ‘The Elusive Miss Ellison’.

I live in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.

I’m married, with four gorgeous children, who all love to read (and write!) as I do (except not in the Regency genre – funny, that!).

My favourite authors are classics like Jane Austen (of course!), Georgette Heyer, and Agatha Christie, but I also enjoy contemporary authors like Susan May Warren and Becky Wade.

I try to write stories that are fun and witty, yet also deal with real issues, such as dealing with forgiveness, the nature of really loving versus ‘true love’, and other challenges we all face at different times.

My Rating: 4 Stars

‘It was, perhaps, the greatest torment to love someone who barely seemed to notice one’s existence.’
So begins Underestimating Miss Cecilia. The second Aynsley daughter suffers from unrequited love for Edward Amherst, the earl next door’s son. Ned has a bit of a reputation; well, more than a bit, but he is reformed, but still doesn’t know Cecy exists. However, the author has a plan for these two and she quite nicely brings it about.

My Rating; 4 stars

I fell in love with Carolyn Miller’s first book, ‘The Elusive Miss Ellison’ and knew this was a Regency writer I wanted to follow. She now has eight books under her belt, with a ninth coming in this particular series. She does do a good Regency! Come along on the journey as Cecy and Ned follow the rules of the time and discover that, sometimes, dreams do come true!

Book Review: ‘A Mountain Worth Moving’ by Amanda Mason

About The Book:

Duty caused him to return. Guilt kept him there.
When his youngest brother, Ben, suffers a horrific injury quickly followed by the death of his father, John Mitchell moves home to assume the role as patriarch of the Triple M Ranch. Four hard years have passed since those tragic events and his family seems more fractured than ever. With one brother permanently disabled, another brother bent on causing even more heartache for the family and one of the largest ranches in Northern Montana to run, John has become an expert at pushing emotions to the side and pushing through the misery. Carrying a burden of guilt over his own role in his family’s situation, John vows to protect his family and his ranch by whatever means necessary.

After experiencing her own heartaches, Jill Morgan has dedicated her professional life to providing therapy to traumatic brain injury patients. When she initially meets the Mitchell family, she can’t shake the feeling that God wants her to help them. She begins to wage a battle to admit Ben to the elite therapy program at the hospital where she works. Expecting his family to be thrilled at the prospects of Ben being awarded one of the coveted spots in the program, she is shocked when she is confronted by a gruff and protective John Mitchell.

Determined to prove to the tall, taciturn, cowboy that he is completely wrong about her and her therapy techniques, Jill throws herself completely into Ben’s rehabilitation. Only when Ben doesn’t respond the way she had thought he would, and she gets to know the cowboy behind the rough exterior, Jill begins to think that maybe she was to help both brothers overcome injuries.
John hasn’t allowed himself to feel anything but guilt for four years. He doesn’t think he deserves happiness, but after getting to know Jill, he knows he can no longer deny the feelings he has for her. Convinced that if Jill knew the truth behind his role in his families tragedies, she would hate him, John must decided whether or not to risk his heart for a fleeting moment of happiness. And when heartache threatens to strike the Mitchell family again and John must decide if there is room in his life for both Jill and his responsibilities to his brothers and mother. He must decide if the burden he carries from the last four years is a mountain worth moving.

About Amanda Mason

Amanda Mason lives in rural Middle Tennessee with her husband and three children. She loves to write, read, sing when no one is listening and chase after her three active children. Mason is a high school teacher by day and a keyboard warrior by night.

My Rating: 5 Stars:

I saw a review for this book from a blogger I follow and it sounded very good, so I purchased it. I enjoy finding new authors and this one was exceptionally well written, great plot, believable characters, and a strong spiritual element, which I do love.

It features a cowboy and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good cowboy story? Especially a very handsome one? John Mitchell is completely consumed by guilt and has moved home to run the family’s ranch after his youngest brother suffers a traumatic brain injury and his father dies. John believes he is to blame for his brother’s injury and that guilt is never far from his mind. Only a few breaths away, actually. When his mother discovers a new program that could help his brother, John balks and doesn’t think it will work any better than the last four years’ of therapy programs has. But he agrees.
Therapist Jill Morgan feels God is telling her to help Ben Mitchell. She has no idea why, because medically speaking, he has gone as far as he can go. But she gets on board, but soon realizes that Ben is not the only Mitchell in desperate need of help.

Amanda Mason has written a story that grabs the reader’s heart and hangs on; we feel their pain and guilt along with the hope that just maybe there is a happy to grab somewhere along the line. Very well written and thoroughly enjoyed by this reader. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: ‘Fragments of Fear’ by Carrie Stuart Parks

About The Book:

“A rollercoaster ride with a lovable protagonist and a suspenseful, twisty plot.” —Colleen Coble

Stolen art. A New Mexico archaeological dig. An abandoned dog. And a secret that’s worth killing for.

Evelyn McTavish’s world came crashing down with the suicide of her fiancé. As she struggles to put her life back together and make a living from her art, she receives a call that her dog is about to be destroyed at the pound. Except she doesn’t own a dog. The shelter is adamant that the microchip embedded in the canine with her name and address makes it hers.

Evelyn recognizes the dog as one owned by archaeologist John Coyote because she was commissioned to draw the two of them. The simple solution is to return the dog to his owner—but she arrives only to discover John’s murdered body.

As Evelyn herself becomes a target, she crosses paths with undercover FBI agent Sawyer Price. The more he gets to know her, the more personally invested he becomes in keeping her safe. Together, they’re desperate to find the links between so many disparate pieces.

And the clock is ticking.

”We have three hours to figure this out and disappear for a bit. It’s hard to kill someone you can’t find.’

Evelyn McTavish, or Tavish, as she prefers to be called, is slowly pulling herself together after her fiancé commits suicide. Then she’s called by a vet clinic to pick up her dog; only she doesn’t own a dog. But this dog’s microchip says she does. Hmmm. From this moment forward, things begin happening at a rapid pace: murders happen, art is stolen, and absolutely nothing is as it seems. Tavish’s life is turned completely upside down. Can she even believe anyone anymore? She connects with an FBI agent, Sawyer Price, and maybe, just maybe he is who he says he is. Even is nobody else is.

From the first moment, this book pulled me into the story and I read for hours at a time, finishing it in less than one day. What a mystery! This is taut, full of excitement and flies along at a rapid pace, and it is a complete surprise at the end! A clock is ticking throughout the book and so was my heart! I was gasping in disbelief. I never guessed for one minute. Not once. Absolutely loved it. Recommended.

Book Review: ‘Just One Kiss’ by Courtney Walsh

About The Book:

He broke her heart. Now, he’s back, and he’s determined to show her what they had isn’t over. . . and he can prove it with just one kiss.

Single mother Carly Collins likes predictability. However, when her son Jaden’s health is threatened, her neatly controlled world is tossed into a tailspin. Nothing is certain anymore, especially her feelings for Josh Dixon, Jaden’s father, her first love and the man responsible for shattering her heart sixteen years ago.

When Josh Dixon walked out of Harbor Pointe, he left behind his only shot at a real family. Now a successful tech mogul, the town rebel has found a cause—ensure his son’s recovery and prove to Carly and Jaden that he’s not the same guy he was back then.

Carly and Josh are forced to wade through messy emotions and questions that have gone unanswered for years, which would be easier if not for the pesky feelings, every bit as strong and impossible to ignore as they ever were.

Will forgiveness win, giving Carly and Josh a second chance at love . . . or will the past prove too much to overcome?

A small town romance about first love second chances and how our most beautiful life might look nothing like we planned.

“Original, romantic, and emotional. Walsh doesn’t just write the typical romance novel. . . She makes you feel for all the characters, sometimes laughing and sometimes crying along with them.” ~Romantic Times

‘I promise that in all things you will forever be my always.’

Every once in a while you read a book that just dives so deep into your heart and involves your emotions to such a degree that you can’t even think about picking up another book right away; a book that makes you smile and cry and just wonder in amazement at the depth of love a man has for a woman. This is that book.

Josh Dixon left Carly Collins with an infant and walked out of her life. He left Carly broken. Now their 16 year old son is having serious health issues and Josh is determined to help and also to prove to Carly that he is so sorry for his past and is determined to win her back. Carly wants nothing to do with this plan. Josh had reasons for leaving and he has had to deal with incredibly painful hurts, but he can’t bear to tell Carly.

This is quite possibly the most poignant, tender and moving romance I have ever read. I can’t really describe adequately how this book made me feel. Walsh has given us a story full of a love that has endured through over twenty years, a love that knows no bounds and is incapable of fading. Josh Dixon is a hero that will stay with me, that’s for sure. He has been hurt beyond imagining, and the girl who loved him through the hurt is the girl he has loved deeply and will love forever. I do not think there is a woman alive who would not want to be loved the way Josh Dixon loves Carly Collins. It’s a love that’s nearly tangible on the page! I highly, highly recommend this novel.

The Ministry of Books

Have you ever been ministered to by a book? Really ministered to, as in God just swooped down and touched you mightily through the pages? I have. Many times. And what’s so amazing about it is this: the very same God who spoke this world into existence, knew before time began that I would need that word at that particular time, AND He created that author and gave her the very words to write that He knew would touch me and minister deeply to my heart. Is that not the most amazing thing? God loves us so very much! My husband and I are going through a bitter trial right now and the enemy of our souls is fighting hard. But this did not come as a surprise to God. He knew it. And He wants the best for us. But, as C.S. Lewis said, ‘We know God wants the best for us, but sometimes we wonder how much the best will hurt.’ No one who serves Christ will get a free pass on suffering. No one. We will hurt. We will be tormented by the enemy at times. We will get sick. But God loves us and He is caring for us in ways that we can’t even imagine. He is an on – time God. He will be there for you, just like He was there at the Red Sea crossing, like He was there when Joseph was in prison, when Paul and Silas were in the dark dungeon, when Daniel faced a hungry den of lions, when the three Hebrew children were thrown in the fiery furnace. He is there! And He will never leave.

God will also fight your battles with you and for you. Read 2 Chronicles sometime. Just see what God did. He told His children, ‘This is not your battle. It is mine. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.’ So the next time you face an impossible situation, look up and say, ‘God, here’s another battle. I’m so excited to see what You’re going to do!’ I dare you! Watch Him work. So , no matter how tough things get, and trust me, they will get tough because no believer is exempt, we serve a God of the impossible!

About the book that ministered to me so much:

“Ma’am, I’m not one of the bad guys.”

So says the handsome man Martha Gabler encounters near her isolated mountain cabin. Tristan Sinclair claims he’s an ATF agent working undercover. And that if she doesn’t play along as his unexpected girlfriend, they’ll both end up dead. Nursing a broken heart, Martha knows a thing or two about love that isn’t real. Still, she calls up all her faith and turns her shaky trust over to Tristan. Soon she’s hoping he’ll take on a new mission: guarding her for the rest of her life.

‘What do You want me to learn from this, Lord? There must be something. Some life lesson that wil hurt, but that will help my faith grow.’

I only recently discovered Shirlee McCoy’s books, but I was hooked from the very first one. She does inspirational suspense well. Her books are ‘keep you on the edge of your seat’ seriously suspenseful, full of believable characters and scenarios and the plus is a great spiritual element, which she is not afraid to include. Boldly. This one is a wonderful book, but more importantly, it ministered to me during a time I truly needed to hear the words here. In the above quote. I am on a mission to read all her books. And she has a lot. I highly recommend this author. Very much.

Don’t Rehearse The Problem

I must admit, this is a fault of mine. When something goes wrong, I rehearse it to DEATH in my mind! And that is wrong! So wrong. God does not want us to dwell on things to the point that they cause us worry, fear and discouragement. Those, in fact, are tools of the enemy of our souls. He loves nothing better than to cause us pain, anxiety and fear. And, I am ashamed to admit, sometimes I allow him to do just that! I just play right into his evil hands.
Why do I do this? Saying I’m only human is just too easy of an answer. I do this because I look at the problem and not at the solution. Then I let it build up in my mind till that is all I can think about. And that, my friends, is where sin walks in the door. I am not keeping my mind stayed on Christ. I am not taking those thoughts captive to Christ. I am loitering in the land of discouragement and negativity. Those spirits would love nothing better than to control our minds and cause us extreme pain. How satan must love it when we walk right into his living room and sit down and let him control our minds! Because that’s what we do when we rehearse the problem. I am guilty. So guilty. There are times when problems hit, that all I see IS the problem. It’s hard, folks. It’s very hard sometimes to be positive when the winds and waves are tossing around you. My brother told me recently that it’s hard to see anything but the waves crashing around you when you are in the storm. But, as my pastor recently preached, Jesus is in the boat!

We must take every thought captive to Christ! We must remember that the power of life and death is in our tongues (Proverbs 18:21). We must allow God to set a guard over our mouths (Psalm 141:3). We must let the words of our mouths and the ‘meditations of our hearts’ be acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:14). Because we can do ALL things through Christ who gives us strength (Philippians 4:13). Even when we don’t feel like it, we can remember that God calls those things that be not as though they were (Romans 4:17). Even when we can’t see daylight for the storm, we can thank God for the sunshine that He is going to bring again!

Sometimes, some days, it seems, I just have to keep praising. Praise when you don’t feel like it. Praise when you see nothing good happening around you. Praise just cause Jesus saved you from hell! Because you know what? Praise confuses the devil. He sees what’s happening to us, knows what he’s throwing at us and we still praise! Whole battles were won because of praise. Read 2 Chronicles 20 sometime. The army of Israel never had to lift one weapon when several armies came against them just because they praised first!!! Praise wins battles. Praise tells the enemy that you refuse to let him torment you, that you refuse to live in his darkness and choose instead to live in God’s light and provision. After all, He will create a stream in the desert, a roadway where there is none, a way where there seems to be no way. He is GOD! NOTHING will ever defeat Him and we are His children! He does not want us to loiter in the land of negativity. He wants us to walk out in the light of His love and goodness!

Who will join me today in praising our way out of discouragement? Let’s do this thing! After all, the glory of the Lord is our rear guard.
