‘Dead End’ (Truth Seekers #3) by Susan Sleeman

About The Book:

Evaluating trace evidence is her job…

When Sierra Byrd’s father needs a kidney transplant, despite her parents’ protest claiming they could never ask for her help, Sierra insists on being tested for the transplant. But when results prove it is physically impossible for her father to be her biological father, her family finally confesses their long-held secret. She was conceived in an affair her mother had the summer before her parents’ wedding. The man she’d come to know as father is named on her birth certificate, but he truly isn’t her father.

But the job just turned personal.

Shocked and hurt, Sierra goes in search of her biological father in the small coastal town where he owns a property management business. But when she arrives in town to find her father has recently disappeared, and she starts asking questions, FBI Agent Reed Rice delivers her second shock in as many days. Her father is wanted for embezzling money from the properties he manages. Despite the evidence staring her in the face, Sierra holds out hope that her father isn’t the criminal that Reed believes him to be. But as Sierra’s desperate search for the truth unearths long-buried secrets and she runs into dead end after dead end, she ignites a killer’s fury, and suddenly her own life is on the line.

Had God put Reed in her life to show her His love and support in human form?’

Sierra Byrd discovers she is not her father’s daughter when she is tested as a possible kidney transplant donor. She discovers her parents’ decades long secret and heads off to find her true biological daughter, only to learn he lives nearby but has been missing the last 4 weeks and is suspected in an embezzlement scheme. Sierra works for the elite Veritas team as their trace evidence expert and begins to process the scene immediately, only to find herself in handcuffs as FBI agent Reed Rice thinks she is part of the criminal set.

Susan Sleeman is my go-to for romantic inspirational suspense. She knows her business and it’s like watching a top of the line crime show on tv. Her research into the criminal and forensic world is impeccable and I love learning all about it! She also weaves a wonderful spiritual them through her books. I have been a huge fan for years! She takes her readers on a fast ride and the suspense continues to ratchet up until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. I now look forward to the next in the series.

‘Foremost’ by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

A second princess. Another key to the treasure. And a cruel king desperate to squelch the growing rebellion.

Raised in an isolated abbey, Lady Maribel desires nothing more than to become a nun and continue practicing her healing arts. She’s carefree and happy with her life…until a visitor comes to the abbey and reveals her true identity as one of the lost princesses.

When he was a young boy, Edmund Chambers helplessly watched King Ethelwulf murder his family. Edmund escaped and has lived in the abbey ever since, uniquely trained to work with wild animals. Secretly, he loves Maribel and desperately hopes she doesn’t complete her holy order vows.

When King Ethelwulf’s army arrives at the abbey to capture Maribel, she flees with Edmund across the desolate Highlands in an attempt to reach Adelaide’s rebel army. Edmund can no longer hide his love, but can Maribel give up her dreams of becoming a nun to love him in return?

About Jody Hedlund

Jody Hedlund is the author of over twenty historicals for both adults and teens and is the winner of numerous awards including the Christy, Carol, and Christian Book Award.

Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Although Jody prefers to experience daring and dangerous adventures through her characters rather than in real life, she’s learned that a calm existence is simply not meant to be (at least in this phase of her life!).

When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.

My Rating: 5 Stars!

‘God had indeed answered our prayer in a way we’d never been able to envision on our own.’

This quote reminded me of Ephesians 3:20 because God is able to do more than we can even dare to dream of.

I am a Jody Hedlund fan and I absolutely love her medieval stories! I personally think this is her forte, too! She brings us book two in her Lost Princesses series, telling the tale of Maribel, one of the twin princesses who was spirited away by a loyal servant when the evil King Ethelwulf took over the castle and murdered her parents. Maribel has been hidden in a convent high in the mountains and has no idea of her identity. She was taught the healing arts from an old nun and she herself has every intention of taking the vows and tending the sick and injured. But the sudden appearance of the old Sister Katherine changes her life completely. Now, her dear friend Edmund must take her away to join her older sister to join forces to fight the evil king and help find her remaining twin.

I loved this very much! Hedlund tells a medieval tale so well that this reader was captivated and stayed up quite late to finish this book. I highly recommend not only this book but the series.

Reading Remembrances

I do not ever remember a time I did not like to read or be read to. I have always loved books. My mama took me to the library the first time when I was less than 3 years old and it’s been a love affair with books ever since. Probably before that. Mama always read to me and my little brother. Just last week, in fact, Jeff and I were discussing this. Mama would hold him on her lap and tuck me into her side and read Bible stories and fairy tales to us nearly every single night. She bought us a Little Golden Book each week at the grocery store, too. I still have many of them, as you can see from the photo above. She also bought us little books with 45 rpm records with them so that we could follow along as the narrator read the book. My brother can still quote entire passages of some!

When I started to school, Mama got me a subscription to the Weekly Reader and then the Weekly Reader Book Club. I thought I was the stuff! I remember pulling the Weekly Reader from the mail box after I got off the school bus and just dragging my feet all the way up the dirt road to our house because I HAD to begin reading! And I got a new book every month! When I learned to read my first Dick and Jane book, everyone who visited our home had to listen to me read. I have a very vivid memory of sitting in the window, well, near the window, reading that book over and over and being filled with joy at the words on the page!

Reading only became more of a love in my life the older I got, too. In fourth grade, all my library visits to the school library had me checking out a series of biographies of famous Americans. I read every single one they had. I loved learning about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Clara Barton, etc. I have always had a very vivid imagination and I pictured myself there in the story with them. I read so much that my mama would say, “If you’re looking for Susie, she’s somewhere with her nose stuck in a book.” My mama, in fact, started me reading Christian fiction with Janette Oke’s ‘Love Comes Softly’. I read that book numerous times and was blessed each time I read it. I still have Mama’s original copy as well as the entire series.

When Tom and I married in 1978, we had only two new things of our own to start our married life: a 19 inch black and white tv and a metal bookcase. Everything else was bought second hand from relatives. But I had a regular date with the library. I would check out whole big bags of books at a time. We didn’t have much of a budget for books, so I didn’t own a huge amount back then. When income tax refund time came, I got books! I could have lived in a book store! In fact, as a girl, my dream was to be locked in the library overnight. All those treasures! All mine for hours and hours!

Gradually I build my library. Then, after six years of infertility, we were expecting a baby! At the time, my mother lived with us. We had 3 bedrooms but the third was taken up by books. We had to put that baby somewhere, so I donated 268 hardcovers to our local one-room library. Ouch, that hurt. But I could go check them out again if I wanted. Then I started building my library up again, but storing them other places, like in boxes under beds, etc. I could not live life without books!

The photos here are just some of my books that I have room for in my home. And there is another book case in my bedroom! I also have a storage building with many bookcases in it. I donate books to our local library, but it’s hard to part with a book.

I don’t remember exactly how I got started in influencing for Christian fiction. I do remember author Mike Dellosso starting a group named The Darlington Society after a book of his. I made his group and I guess it started from there. That was in 2010. I began reviewing and it just took off from there. I am doing what I love most doing.

I now influence for a great many authors of Christian fiction. I love this genre most. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been going through a trial and the book I was reading ministered to me. It’s so amazing to me that the very same God who spoke this entire universe into existence knew that on that day I’d be going through that trial, so He created an author and gave them the words to write in that book and allowed me to read it to minister to my spirit!~

So, to all the writers for whom I influence, if you read this, please know beyond a shadow of a doubt how much I appreciate you. The fact that you trust me with your hard work is a blessing that I will never, ever take for granted! Not once. Your writing has blessed me beyond measure and I consider it a total blessing from God to be able to do this, read and review and influence for such wonderful books. Books that honor Him and bring glory to the name of Christ Jesus!

So there it is: a bit of my reading story. I hope that I will always have clarity of mind to continue reading and influencing as long as God allows me life on this earth. Blessings!!

About Christy Barritt

Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

My Rating: 4 Stars!

‘His whole life had been proof that what a person hoped waited for them in the future was often not reality.

This was the first book I’d read by Christy Barritt. I’d heard other readers talk about how good she was and finally got a chance to see for myself that she was indeed a very good suspense writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were believable, the plot was tight and the writing well done. I will read more by this author.

‘A Single Light’ by Tosca Lee

About The Book

In this gripping sequel to The Line Between, which New York Times bestselling author Alex Kava calls “everything you want in a thriller,” cult escapee Wynter Roth and ex-soldier Chase Miller emerge from their bunker to find a country ravaged by disease, and Wynter is the only one who can save it.

Six months after vanishing into an underground silo with sixty others, Wynter and Chase emerge to find the area abandoned. There is no sign of Noah and the rest of the group that was supposed to greet them when they emerged—the same people Wynter was counting on to help her locate the IV antibiotics her gravely ill friend, Julie, needs in order to live.

As the clock ticks down on Julie’s life, Wynter and Chase embark on a desperate search for medicine and answers. But what they find is not a nation on the cusp of recovery thanks to the promising new vaccine Wynter herself had a hand in creating, but one decimated by disease. What happened while they were underground?

With food and water in limited supply and their own survival in question, Chase and Wynter must venture further and further from the silo. Aided by an enigmatic mute named Otto, they come face-to-face with a society radically changed by global pandemic, where communities scrabble to survive under rogue leaders and cities are war zones. As hope fades by the hour and Wynter learns the terrible truth of the last six months, she is called upon once again to help save the nation she no longer recognizes—a place so dark she’s no longer sure it can even survive.

Fast-paced and taut, A Single Light is a breathless thriller of nonstop suspense about the risks of living in a world outside the safe confines of our closely-held beliefs and the relationships and lives that inspire us.

Don’t miss this riveting conclusion to The Line Between!

My Rating: 4 Stars!

I have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to Tosca Lee’s first novel in this series. The Line Between was amazing. This book picks up where the first left off. Wynter and Chase along with 60 more are sealed on the silo for six months. Waiting to be unsealed and hoping for a better world when they emerge, they are sadly disappointed in a world seemingly gone completely mad. Desperate to find antibiotics to save a life, they encounter madness after madness. Come along on this riveting journey with them. You will not be disappointed.

‘Do not underestimate me. I have never cowered from danger and I shall not start now.’

Jody Hedlund’s first book in The Lost Princesses is so good! The prequel novella, Always, sets the stage for this one, so it really needs to be read first. Adelaide, who is in reality the Crown Princess Constance, has been hidden for 17 years with a family loyal to her late father and mother, the king and queen of Mercia. When her adoptive mother dies, she reveals to Adelaide her true identity. From then on, danger follows her as the evil King Ethelwulf is set on killing her.

Sir Christopher of Langley, adoptive brother of Adelaide, left his home thinking his father supported the evil king, and swore his fealty to the King of a neighboring country. He has now returned and discovers that Adelaide is no longer a young girl and he has developed feelings for her. But he determines not to act on those feelings because as a queen, he cannot come near to being near her station.

Hedlund has excelled once again with her medieval tale. Truly, I think this is her forte. She does a magnificent job with these stories. I love this time period and she is wonderful at it. I loved every minute and now I can’t wait for the next lost princess’s tale!

This book was just absolutely delightful and I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of it. The moment I began reading, I knew it was going to be so much fun. A thoroughly swoon-worthy hero and an engaging heroine made this book. The author’s dry wit throughout was just a wonderful addition as well. Perfect read for a vacation or just anytime you want to read a sweet book. It’s even worthy of a re-read.

When a killer begins injecting victims with Galveston, TX, and those targeted are law enforcement, the FBI sends in two well trained agents, both of whom are snipers. Jon and Leah are tasked with bringing the killer to justice before anyone else is targeted.

This a tight, well written inspirational suspense novel, and I enjoyed it for the most part. About midway through, it kind of bogged down for me and the romance portion seemed a bit forced. But that’s only my opinion. Reviews are very subjective. It is a good novel of suspense and I can recommend it.

My Rating: 3 Stars!
