Book Review: ‘Dead Silence’ by Susan Sleeman

About The Book:

A child she’ll do anything to keep.
After Kelsey Moore’s husband dies, she wants only one thing. To adopt her husband’s son who she has come to call her own. But as she begins the process that her husband had dragged his feet on, she learns a secret so shocking she begins to question everything she knows except for the love she feels for her son. The child is not her husband’s biological child, her former husband never had legal custody of the boy, and no one knows where he got the child. Fearing she might lose her son, Kelsey must find his birth mother and convince her to give up her parental rights.

A danger she’s never known.
But when Kelsey starts asking questions, she runs into a brick wall named DEA Agent Devon Dunbar. Devon has been investigating an adoption/human trafficking ring with drug connections for the last six months, and he’s not about to let Kelsey interfere in his investigation. But even if Devon brings out feelings she never thought she’d experience again, and he asks her to trust him, Kelsey can’t even give him the benefit of the doubt. Not with the way her husband had lied to her and not even when her own life is on the line. If she doesn’t succeed, she could lose the one thing that means everything to her  –  her five-year-old son.

My Rating: 5 Stars!

‘Could she trust God in such a painful thing?’

Susan Sleeman is riveting in her second book in the Truth Seekers series. Focusing on the members of the Veritas Group, a collection of ultra specialists in crime solving, this book zeroes in on Kelsey Moore, recent widow and stepmother to a five year old boy, who someone snatches from her one night on her way home from work. A bystander sees what happens and rescues the child. This bystander is a undercover DEA agent, Devon Dunbar, but he thinks the snatcher is a member of a drug cartel he has been working for six months to take down. In his investigation, he discovers that Kelsey’s son Jace is not only not related to her dead husband, but he was most likely purchased in a child snatching ring.

As they begin to work together, both Kelsey and Devon begin to develop feelings for one another, but both have been hurt in the past and do not want to go down that road again. But her son is still in danger. Can Devon manage to keep the boy safe without falling for the mother? Will they uncover and even deeper crime than they first thought?

Sleeman is a huge favorite of mine. She completely slays a suspense novel, and includes a wonderful spiritual theme in the bargain. She is a definite go-to author for me. I look forward to each of her books eagerly. Now I have to wait for the next.

Book Review: ‘Tate’ by Susan May Warren

About the Book:

“He was sent here to kill you, wasn’t he?” Glo’s voice emerged in a whisper of horror.

Tate drew in a breath, and even Knox looked away as Tate nodded.

Oh, she knew it. Apparently, she had a type.

The kind of men who didn’t care what trouble—or death—might be waiting for them. Who turned their face to it and charged ahead.

The kind of men who died for what they believed in.

The kind of men who would break her heart.

What will it cost this bodyguard to save the woman he loves?

*Susie writes a delightful story! NYT bestselling author Dee Henderson.*

Susan May Warren is the USA Today best-selling, Christy and RITA award-winning novelist of over 65 novels, including the best-selling Montana Rescue and Montana Fire series.

Bodyguard Tate Marshall, has always been the family troublemaker

Maybe it’s his propensity to get entangled in other people’s problems. Now, he’s in over his head because he’s desperately in love with the woman he’s tasked to protect, the beautiful Gloria, “Glo” Jackson, daughter of US Senator and presidential hopeful Reba Jackson. A member of the country band, the Yankee Belles, Glo was targeted in a recent terrorist attack designed to deter her mother from running, and Tate will do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means letting her go.

Country music artist Glo Jackson isn’t afraid of trouble…

Stubborn and brave, Glo isn’t about to hide from threats, at least the kind that won’t cost her heart. She’s already paid a terrible price for the war on terror, and she refuses to fall for a man who might die, especially because of her. Better to keep him away, even if it means sacrificing her heart.

But when danger threatens them both, what will they sacrifice to keep each other safe?

As the presidential campaign heats up and the threats deepen, so does the attraction between Tate and Glo. But what will it cost Tate to keep her alive? And what will Glo do to keep from losing another man she loves?

The gripping second installment of the Montana Marshalls series.

About Susan May Warren

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I’m a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I’m an adventurer — having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that’s why my characters can’t sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another — they’re too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories.

Here’s my “Official” Bio.

With over 1 million books sold, critically acclaimed novelist Susan May Warren is the Christy, RITA and Carol award-winning author of over forty-five novels with Tyndale, Barbour, Steeple Hill and Summerside Press. Known for her compelling plots and unforgettable characters, Susan has written contemporary and historical romances, romantic-suspense, thrillers, rom-com and Christmas novellas.

With books translated into eight languages, many of her novels have been ECPA and CBA bestsellers, were chosen as Top Picks by Romantic Times, and have won the RWA’s Inspirational Reader’s Choice contest and the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year award. She’s a three time RITA finalist and an eight time Christy Finalist.

Of her books, Publisher’s Weekly has written, “Warren lays bare her characters’ human frailties, including fear, grief, and resentment, as openly as she details their virtues of love, devotion, and resiliency. She has crafted an engaging tale of romance, rivalry, and the power of forgiveness.”

And Library Journal adds, “Warren’s characters are well-developed and she knows how to create a first rate contemporary romance…”

Susan is also a nationally acclaimed writing coach, teaching at conferences around the nation and winner of the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers Mentor of the Year award. She’s also the author of the popular writing method, The Story Equation.

My Rating: 5 Stars!

‘Surrender is not a Ranger word. Fine. Let the battle begin.’

Susan May Warren continues her Montana Marshalls series with the second brother, Tate. Tate has always found trouble easily, but he has also always tried his best to solve problems. The woman he’s tasked with protecting, Gloria Jackson, also the woman he’s in love with, and daughter of a senator is targeted. Glo is a member of a country band, the Yankee Belles, and in the public eye, which makes her a bigger target.

Glo doesn’t want to hide from these threats and Tate is determined to keep her safe. She’s also trying to run from Tate because she’s already lost someone she loves to danger, so no way is someone else going to die because of her.

We also meet another Marshall brother in this book, Ford, and I am on pins and needles waiting for his story, which is next.

Will Tate stop a minute and listen or will he plunge right in and do what he thinks is best, even if may not be? He needs to learn that he is loved just because he’s Tate and not because of what he does. And Glo needs to learn that she’s also worth loving just because of who she is also.

I am a forever fan of Warren’s books and can’t wait to get my hands on them. She dives into the story with no holds barred and takes her readers along for the ride and we can’t release our breaths till the end. She knows how to make the reader one with the character and we feel everything. I love it when an author engages me this way. I purely love it. And the spiritual depth to her novels is amazing. Highly recommended.

Book Review: ‘Cold Aim’ by Janice Cantore

About The Book:

Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s small town is still reeling from a devastating fire when the FBI asks for help: Could she shelter a witness in a high-profile human trafficking case? Initially reluctant to put the townspeople of Rogue’s Hollow at risk, Tess is swayed after she sees Pastor Oliver Macpherson’s genuine conviction to rescue those in need, a trait in him she’s coming to love more each day.

Tess’s fledgling faith is tested when crews of workmen from out of town come in to assist with the fire cleanup and she worries that one of these strangers might shine a light on things best kept hidden. Neither she nor Oliver knows that Rogue’s Hollow is already home to a suspect from a twenty-five-year-old murder case . . . and someone is taking cold aim at those Tess is sworn to protect.

My Rating: 5 Stars!

‘There is no matter of degree to sin. All of us have our own baggage.’

Janice Cantore brings us book 3 in her Line of Duty series and it’s wonderful. Cantore is a retired police officer and it shows in her books. I love that she brings her expertise to her writing. I was drawn in from the very first and could not tear myself away.

Police Chief Tess O’Rourke is over a small town in Oregon that is suffering in the aftermath of a devastating fire and then the FBI shows up on her doorstep asking for help in hiding the witness to a brutal crime lord’s human trafficking case. Tess doesn’t want to put the people of her tiny hamlet in harm’s way, but agrees after seeing the pastor’s conviction to help those in need. Tess and Pastor Oliver Macpherson have been seeing each other and he is helping her with her newfound faith.

Things soon heat up with crews of workmen come from out of town to help with the fire clean up and a vicious killer is one of the crew, unbeknownst to Tess or anyone else. He will stop at nothing to find this witness and kill her. Then there is that 25 year old murder case that already home to Rogue Hollow and Tess fears for her town nearly every moment.

Cantore manages to keep the reader completely engrossed in this story, which plays out like an episode of Law and Order, only better. I loved this book and look forward to more from Cantore.

‘People failed. Horses didn’t. Horses never lied.’

Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter have a lot in common, one thing being they both love horse, so when Ben wants to get an equine therapy barn up and running, Ashley is very willing to help out. I loved this aspect of the story. Ben has been through a very rough time and Ashley has problems with trust, so they can both benefit from the equine therapy. Both stand in need of God’s grace. He bestows that grace on His children every day. Hatcher weaves together a story of God’s redemption that is heartwarming nd full of faith. Interspersed with short vignettes told by Ben’s great great grandfather, this family settles into your heart and will nourish your spirit as you read.

Book Review: ‘Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass’ by Heather Day Gilbert

About The Book:

When exotic pet-sitter Belinda Blake moves into a carriage house in tony Greenwich, Connecticut, she’s hoping to find some new clients. Instead she discovers a corpse in the garden—and a knack for solving murders . . .

Pet-sitter Belinda Blake doesn’t rattle easily, but move-in day has been eventful, to say the least. The python in her care tried to slither to freedom—just as she met Stone Carrington V, her landlords’ disarmingly handsome son. With the constrictor back in its cage, she heads out to the garden, only to discover a designer shoe poking out of the boxwood hedge—attached to a woman’s dead body.

The victim, Margo Fenton, was a Carrington family friend, and no one in their circle seems above suspicion. Between client trips to Manhattan and visits to her family in upstate New York, Belinda begins to put the pieces together. But though she’s falling for Stone’s numerous charms, Belinda wonders if she’s cozying up to a killer. And soon, daily contact with a deadly reptile might be the least dangerous part of her life . . .

About Heather Day Gilbert

HEATHER DAY GILBERT, an ECPA Christy award finalist and Grace award winner, writes contemporary mysteries and Viking historicals. Her novels feature small towns, family relationships, and women who aren’t afraid to protect those they love. Publisher’s Weekly gave Heather’s Viking historical Forest Child a starred review, saying it is “an engaging story depicting timeless human struggles with faith, love, loyalty, and leadership.”

Find Heather on Pinterest (heatherdgilbert), Instagram (@heatherdaygilbert), Twitter (@heatherdgilbert), and Facebook (heatherdaygilbert). You can find all her books at heatherdaygilbert.com

My Rating: 4 stars!

Once again Heather Gilbert shows her readers that she is a dab hand at cozy mysteries. A pet sitter babysitting a huge snake doesn’t deter Belinda Blake one bit. She is living in a small apartment on the estate of a super rich family when she finds a dead body in her yard. From then on, Belinda is in a mission to discover the killer. Readers are as well and Gilbert leads us on a merry chase, for I was completely surprised at the identity of the culprit.

‘The sheriff always seemed to aim at his own foot when he fired off his mouth.’

Angela Ruth Strong continues her super fun ‘The CafFUNated Mystery series with this absolutely delightful offering.  Featuring Tandy and Marissa, one a coffee drinker, the other a tea drinker, who open up a part coffee/part tea shop, this one is just so much fun all the way to the very end.

People just seem to fall dead right near Tandy and Marissa.  Then they think they are the best ones to solve the case. And they are mostly right.  After all, didn’t they solve the murder of the last person who fell dead right in front of their very eyes?  Well, here they go again when a car theft ring brings their dastardly deeds to the small town of Grace Springs.  But they have to manage to solve the crime without either of them landing in jail this time.

I love these gals.  Despite the fact that they couldn’t stand each other when they first met, they really are great together as amateur sleuths.  And I love Marissa’s near constant klutziness.  The entire cast of quirky characters (minus the bad guys, of course) have just endeared themselves to me.  And Strong’s wit is so refreshing!  There was nothing NOT to like about this book.  And….there is some seriously good wisdom about relationships on these pages.  A wise person would heed them.

Upcoming Books I Am Looking Forward To Reading

I must give fair warning right upfront that this will be a bit of a lengthy post. I love to read more than most anything. Well, except Jesus, but that is a given. So here are some upcoming books that I am most eager to read. There will possibly be more coming, too. I just haven’t heard of them yet. So here goes. I hope you’re looking forward to some or all of these, too.

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock

A gripping new novel from New York Times bestselling author Terri Blackstock.

One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isn’t until he’s sidelined by an injury that he’s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.

Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher’s daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate’s drunken dad was loud—and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his father’s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.

Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and she’s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where he’s using lies and his family’s money to sway the judge. She’s barely hanging on, and she’s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.

As they deal with the present—including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire that’s threatening their town—their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed.

Book Review: ‘Healing The Cowboy’s Heart’ by Ruth Logan Herne

My Rating: 5 stars!

‘She’d let her foolish head get filled with those silly fairy-tale dreams she never should have let herself entertain because she knew better.’

Ruth Logan Herne takes her readers back to Shepherd’s Crossing in Idaho where we have the story of horse breeder Isaiah Woods and veterinarian Charlotte Fitzgerald, two who should have been sworn enemies. Charlotte is determined to be a good vet and take care of the horses around the area, even when the long time veterinarian makes it known she is not welcome.

Herne once again proves she writes straight from the heart. There are good lessons to be learned here from this book and the characters who allow God to guide them. Well done!

Author Interview and Book Review: ‘She Walks In Love’ by MaryLu Tyndall

Hello!  I am so excited to host MaryLu Tyndall on my blog today.  I was a forever fan with my first book read of hers.  Her pirate tales are so fascinating and she tells them so well, I feel as if I’m standing on the ships deck with the sea spray against my face.  But let’s talk to MaryLu today about her book, She Walks in Love, her second in the Protectors of the Spear series.

1.  When did you know that you wanted to write and did you know you wanted to write Christian fiction?

I started writing when I was very young. I had a poem published in my high school year book, and I also wrote a couple of novels just for fun. But then I grew up (unfortunately) and the responsibilities of life got in the way. I didn’t write anything for years and years and never considered that I’d write again, let alone get published!  But one day the Lord placed an idea on my heart, a glorious, wonderful, crazy idea to write a novel about a Christian pirate. He then freed up some of my time, so I thought, why not? I obeyed, and lo and behold, the Lord opened door after door and He got that very first novel published!

2.  How do you get your ideas for books?

My ideas come from a variety of places: From books I read, movies, life, history, etc, but mainly I believe the Lord is the one who plants an idea on my heart. Those ideas usually simmer for a while until I start thinking about them more and more. Then I start to see the characters come to life in my mind. I see their faces and personalities! It’s like they are saying, “Write my story!”. That’s when I know it’s time to write that novel.

3.  Do you do a lot of research for each book?

Yes.  Research is really not my thing at all. I love history, but diving into the details and trying to find certain facts I need to know can be quite time consuming and difficult. Sometimes I have no idea where to go to find a certain fact. I have volumes of history books on my shelves and a host of links to online sights, so I do my best!

4.  I love, love that you include spiritual warfare in your books. I firmly believe in this.  Have you ever taken flack for this?

Yes. I’ve had some negative comments for sure, but not as many as I thought I would!  I realize that much of the church either doesn’t believe in spiritual warfare and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, or they steer away from such topics out of fear and ignorance. In fact, rare is the pastor who teaches its members how to do battle against our enemy and win!  That’s why I feel the Lord wants me to write about these things, to show believers that we battle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual rulers in high places. And we don’t have to live a life in subjection to them or a life of defeat. We are victorious through Jesus!

5.  Does the Holy Spirit speak to your heart about what to include in your books?

All the time! I can’t say there’s been a book I’ve written that the Holy Spirit hasn’t been right alongside me, leading me and telling me what to write. He and I have become good friends. 🙂

6.  You usually write pirate tales. Why did you decide to go to the medieval period? Which is my favorite setting, by the way.

It’s actually one of my favorite settings too! I’ve always loved medieval stories. Publishers will tell you that medievals don’t sell well, so I sort of steered away from it for a while. But they also told me pirate stories don’t sell well either, and that was wrong too.  Anyway, I couldn’t wait to dive into that time period, and I’ve had a great time writing my Protector of the Spear series. Another aspect of the medieval time period is that you can get away with more spiritual content because people in that day were very superstitious and highly spiritual, albeit not always in a good way, but more open to it nonetheless.

7.  What do you want readers to take away from this book?

There are many themes that run through She Walks in Love, but there are two main things I hope people will walk away with after they turn the last page. One, that God never leaves us, even if we feel like He’s gone, even if bad things happen to us over and over, He is there, watching over us, orchestrating events to bring us back to Him. And two, that this short life on earth is nothing compared to eternity, and that if we look at this life through that lens, all our problems and struggles will seem small and worth enduring for the glory God has in store for us.

My Rating: 5 stars!

‘Evil is astir this night. It begs entrance to this holy place.’

MaryLu Tyndall brings us her second novel in the ‘Protectors of the Spear’ series and it is so good.
The Spear is supposed to be the one which pierced the Savior’s side at His crucifixion and great powers lie within it. Lady Christiana D’Clere is the new protector of the Spear, her sister Alexia being the first. Lady Christiana has been kept drugged by the wicked steward of her family’s estate, he wanting control. There is also an evil bishop to deal with along with two who tread deeply into the dark side.

Christiana has escaped and is running for her life, protected by Sir Jarin the Just. He is determined to restore her to her rightful place as lady of Luxley Castle. But they will have to face many obstacles, both of a physical nature and from the spiritual realm. And Christiana must learn to trust that even though the blood of the Christ stains the relic, the power within her comes from God Himself. Sir Jarin has to learn to rely on powers greater than his own as a knight, as the dark powers that chase them seem only to grow stronger.

MaryLu Tyndall is a wonder at these spiritual warfare novels. She opens her readers’ eyes into that realm where evil does indeed fight against the right. I read this one in only one day. I am a forever fan. I very much recommend this one.
