Reminiscent of Diane Ackerman’s The Zookeeper’s Wife, this stunning novel draws from true accounts to shine a light on a period of Holland’s darkest history and bravest heroes.
1942. As war rips through the heart of Holland, childhood friends Josie van Rees and Eliese Linden partner with a few daring citizens to rescue Eliese’s son and hundreds of other Jewish children who await deportation in a converted theater in Amsterdam. But amid their resistance work, Josie and Eliese’s dangerous secrets could derail their friendship and their entire mission. When the enemy finds these women, only one will escape.
Seventy-five years later, Ava Drake begins to suspect that her great-grandfather William Kingston was not the World War II hero he claimed to be. Her work as director of the prestigious Kingston Family Foundation leads her to Landon West’s Ugandan coffee plantation, and Ava and Landon soon discover a connection between their families. As Landon’s great-grandmother shares the broken pieces of her story, Ava must confront the greatest loss in her own life and powerful members of the Kingston family who will do anything to keep the truth buried.
Illuminating the story and strength of these women, award-winning author Melanie Dobson transports listeners through time and place, from World War II, Holland, to contemporary Uganda, in this rich and inspiring novel.
About Melanie Dobson
Writing fiction is Melanie Dobson’s excuse to explore abandoned houses, travel to unique places, and spend hours reading old books and journals. The award-winning author of twenty novels, Melanie enjoys stitching together both time-slip and historical stories including Hidden Among the Stars, Catching the Wind, Enchanted Isle, and the Legacy of Love novels. Chateau of Secrets and Catching the Wind both received a Carol Award for historical fiction, Catching the Wind’s audiobook won the 2018 Audie for Inspirational Novel, and The Black Cloister was ForeWord’s Book of the Year for Religious Fiction. Her next time-slip novel, Memories of Glass, comes out in 2019.
Melanie and her husband, Jon, have two daughters. After moving numerous times with Jon’s work, the Dobson family has finally settled near Portland, Oregon, and they love to travel and hike in both the mountains and the cliffs above the Pacific. When Melanie isn’t writing, she enjoys exploring ghost towns and dusty back roads, dancing, and reading stories with her girls.
More information about Melanie and her books is available at her website (www.melaniedobson.com), or at either of the following social media platforms:
‘Hatred stops at nothing to destroy, but love can break through the root of evil.’
Melanie Dobson is a master at this type of story: dual time line, one period set in a very dark period of history during the Nazi invasion of Holland, and another in the present day when a young woman stumbles upon her family history and has a great deal to learn about those dark days.
This one reminds me some of The Zookeeper’s Wife, with characters determined to do their part in the middle of all the atrocities and hatred spreading through their beloved country. Dobson knows her way around this. Her research is impeccable and it’s a story that needed to be told, based on fact.

Anita Stansfield
Anita Stansfield has been the reigning queen of LDS romantic fiction for nearly two decades,
although her general market releases have been among her readers favorites. Her work has
shattered the stereotypes of romance novels with her trademark ability to combine great
storytelling with intense psychological depth as she focuses on the emotional struggles of the
human experience. Her novels cover a huge spectrum, from the eighteenth century to the present,
from heart warming to heart stopping. Hundreds of thousands of readers agree: Anita Stansfield’s
characters and the lives they lead are not easy to forget.

Joanna Barker was born and raised in northern California. She discovered her love for historical fiction after visiting England as an eleven-year-old, and subsequently read every Jane Austen book she could get her hands on. After graduating Brigham Young University with a degree in English, she worked as an acquisitions editor before devoting herself full-time to writing. She enjoys music, chocolate, and reading everything from romance to science fiction. She lives in Utah and is just a little crazy about her husband and two wild-but-loveable boys.
Esther Hatch
Esther Hatch grew up on a cherry orchard in rural Utah. After high school, she alternated living in Russia to teach children English and attending Brigham Young University in order to get a degree in archaeology. She began writing when one of her favorite authors invited her to join a critique group. The only catch was she had to be a writer. Not one to be left out of an opportunity to socialize and try something new; she started on her first novel that week.
I had never read any of these authors before and was quite pleasantly surprised. This is a compilation of absolutely delightful stories set in Regency England at Christmas time. Each one is unique in its own way and very precious. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Recommended.

I never miss one of Melody Carlson’s Christmas tales. They are so good and hopeful. This time around a single mother and her eight year old daughter move from Phoenix to Washington state where the mom has a new job. It’s nearing Christmas time and this town goes all out! Much to the mom’s dismay. She has never had a good experience at Christmas time. Never. But what happens will bless you and restore her faith in Christmas again. Don’t miss this wonderful little story.

Three Delightful Christmas Tales from Beloved Storyteller Michelle Griep
Pour yourself a cuppa, get lost in the merriment of the season, and enjoy a Dickensian Christmas in three stories from fan favorite Michelle Griep:
12 Days a Bleakly Manor: Brought together under mysterious circumstances, Clara and Ben discover that what they’ve been striving for isn’t what ultimately matters. What matters most is what Christmas is all about . . . love.
A Tale of Two Hearts: Pleasure seeker William Barlow needs a wife immediately to gain his uncle’s inheritance, and Mina Scott is just the girl to make him look respectable—too bad she turns him down. Ought he give her a second chance?
The Old Lace Shop: Recently widowed Bella White is finally freed from the domination of the overbearing men in her life, but when she enters into a business partnership with the handsome Edmund Archer, she begins to wonder if marriage is worth a second chance.
About Michelle Griep
I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I’ve been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write–except for that graffiti phase I went through as teenager.
My Rating: 4 Stars!
‘I have long abhorred black. It is a great abyss, sucking in the colours of the rainbow and wringing the life out of them.’
Thus begins ‘The Old Lace Shop’, the final offering in this collection from Michelle Griep, whose books I absolutely never miss. With an opening line like that, you are drawn in and you don’t let go until the last word. Griep knows how to fashion a story and wrap her readers around it in a wonderful way. I was excited to read this final installment in her series and I’m very glad I did. I enjoyed it so much! Recommended. Do not miss this one.

‘You need to get it in your head that someone is trying to kill you and they don’t seem likely to stop trying anytime soon.’
Lynn Blackburn finishes off her Dive Team Investigations series with Gabe and Anissa’s story and she definitely saved the best for last! I was captivated from the very beginning and could barely stand to put the book down when life intruded. I was completely surprised by the culprit, too. Blackburn weaves this story so seamlessly and the reader is swept away with each word! She blends the intrigue, danger and romance effortlessly to make for a wonderful read! I thoroughly enjoyed every moment! Highly recommended.

About Tari Faris
I have been writing fiction for more than twelve years. It has been an exciting journey for this math-loving-dyslexic girl. I had read less than a handful of novels by the time I graduated from college and I thought I would end up in the field of science or math. But God had other plans and I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. As someone told me once, God’s plans may not be easy, and they may not always make sense but they are never boring.
In addition to my writing, I also work for My Book Therapy as a special project project manager and blog coordinator for LearnHowToWriteAnNovel.com and you can find me blogging over there on occasion.
When I am not writing or working, I spend time with my amazing husband. We have been married for fifteen wonderful years and have three sweet children. In my free time, I love coffee, rock hounding with my husband and kids, and distracting myself from housework.
My Rating: 5 Stars!
‘When you’ve got nothing left, that’s when you see how real your faith is. Faith with everything you want is easy. But faith when everything goes wrong? That’s when God alone has to be enough.’ This was wonderful debut novel from Tari Faris! I loved everything about it. She took us to the small Michigan town of Heritage in her prequel novella, P.S. Goodbye, and that made me want to continue to read her work. I’ve just finished this one and now I want another already! In all seriousness, Tari Faris is a wonderful and talented new voice in Christian fiction! These small town characters have dug deep into my heart and I’m going to let them stay. Her writing is fresh, full and just plain satisfying to this reader. With her heroine, Hannah, who wants to help everyone and is determined to see the town revitalized, and her hero, Luke, desperately wishing he belonged to someone, Faris sets the stage for a fulfilling read. She has crafted a solid romance (with a bonus one thrown in) and a strong spiritual thread that ministered to me. Well done! Highly recommended *My thanks to the publisher, Revell, for an advance copy of this book. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

Detail from Too Early, 1873, by James Tissot (French, 1836-1902)
I am so
excited to have Jen Turano as a guest on my blog today! I have been reading her books since the very
first one and loved them all! Today, Jen
is going to answer some questions and giving away a copy of her latest book, A
Diamond in The Rough. Stay with us until
the end for a chance to win.
Have you always loved books and been
a reader?
As a child,
I was incredibly shy. I know, I know,
shocking, right? But because of that, I
liked to hide away with my books, which was probably responsible for how I was
able to read by the time I was three. My
parents, being typical parents, thought that meant I was a genius—they soon
discovered they were quite mistaken because, well, I’m no genius, just a lover
of story.
When did you know w you wanted to be
a writer?
Oddly
enough, I never really considered the idea of becoming a writer until my son
was in third grade. I majored in fashion
in college, worked retail for years, then decided to be a stay-at-home mom
after Dom was born. But, when he was in
third grade, we read this ridiculous series together, and after finishing the
sixth book (I never fessed up to him that the sixth book was not the end of the
series—he only learned that last year when he was in college.) Dom said that
the stories I used to make up for him when he was really little were better
than the story we’d just read. That was
the start of me writing, and while I have seven books in different genres that
will never see the light of day because they’re seriously lacking, I finally
figured things out with historical romance, and I’ve been writing ever since.
You set your books, with the
exception of one, in the late 19th century. How did you come to that setting?
I read a
book about Alva Vanderbilt, and found her story fascinating. That led to a love of the Gilded Age, and
because it was an age with such progressive inventions and fortunes being made
overnight, I have enough fodder for story ideas that’ll last for years.
Your novels have a decidedly humorous
bent. Are you a naturally funny person?
I’ve been
told I look at the world in an unusual way, which might mean I’m slightly
amusing, although I’m pretty sure I’m more on the lines of weird, which seems
to help with writing stories that embrace my love of the absurd.
Do you plot a book and then write or
are you a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?
When I have
a new idea for a series, I’m required to write out a detailed synopsis to send
to my editing team, which they ten take to publishing committee to get it
approved. That means that I always know
where a series is going, and to some extent, where a book is heading. Nevertheless, with that said, when I get down
to writing an actual book, I only plot out five chapters at a time because
doing anything more than that is a waste of time, since my characters
definitely change as I write them, as do plotlines.
I have been with you since the first
book and eagerly await each one. What do
you hope readers take away from A Diamond in the Rough?
I’ve always felt that my job as a writer is to entertain. Life is difficult these days, and so my hope is that my books will provide readers with a short escape from their difficulties, or better yet, provide them with a much needed laugh or two.
My Rating: 5 Stars!!!
‘You must have realized by now that I’m not always keen to follow rules.’
Well, if you have never read a book by Jen Turano, you are definitely missing out on a wonderfully funny, delightful and rip roaring good time. Miss Poppy Garrison (don’t you love that name?) wants to help save her family from financial setbacks, so she accepts what she truly believes is blackmail from her grandmother to have a social season in New York. Poppy, however, is not the least bit socially adept and misfortune and chaos seem to follow her everywhere. Now, at the same time Poppy is having her season and quite ruining it, the Earl of Lonsdale comes to America in search of an American heiress, accompanied by his cousin, Reginald Blackburn, the second son of a very well known duke, a fact he does not broadcast. Somehow or another, Reginald finds himself roped into teaching Poppy all the social intricacies of the day by her grandmother! How did that happen? Well, when two people are thrown together all the time, certain feelings are bound to develop.
Poppy Garrison is a law unto herself and crazy exploits ensue in every direction in this book. I declare to goodness, I loved it tremendously! I was eating lunch out one day and reading this book and just burst into great laughter. Out loud! And I didn’t care one bit what people thought about me. Turano’s books are so good that I find myself going back and reading passages all over again just so I can laugh some more. Her trademark dry humor is the absolute best! Her books are so vividly written, that they run across the screen in my mind like a play, while I enjoy every single sentence. I highly recommend not only this book, but every one of her books! They are so much fun!

‘Don’t worry about me, Grace. I’m a big boy and this ain’t my first rodeo.’
