My Rating: 3 Stars
I heard the buzz about this book before I decided to read it. I figured with all the good things that were being said about it would make it a great read. I was sadly disappointed. I’m in the minority, I guess. The writing was good, but I could not connect with the characters. I consider that the main point in reading a book if the characters are well fleshed out and believable. This did not ring true to me. I was also disappointed at the beginning when the two characters were living together and the female one drank so much alcohol that she didn’t even remember falling asleep one night. This was a Christian fiction story but that bothered me. I know God redeems and the book ends differently, but it was just a deal breaker for me. As was the swearing and steamy scenes later. I want something different, I guess, from a Christian story. Sadly, this wasn’t it.
My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion is my own.

‘Fear had a way of holding praise ransom.’

Ah, these Murphy Brothers. I have read these books, each brother has one, and one brother has two, with such heartfelt joy. These seven men whose stories were so impactful. I disappeared into each one and was blessed over and over again. Jennifer Rodewald knows exactly how to plumb the absolute depths of human emotion, which includes heartbreak, pain, joy, praise, and more. It’s like nothing I’ve experienced when I dive into one of her books.

These seven Murphy brothers are amazing men. One reason is because they were raised by amazing parents, Kevin and Helen Murphy. Now, in this powerful book, we get to meet the parents in more depth. These parents who raised seven sons to love God and do the right thing. These parents whose faith was rooted deeply in Jesus Christ. And….we find out that these parents didn’t always have it together. Oh my goodness, this book just did me in. In fact, as I sit here typing this review, I have tears in my eyes. It is so incredibly good. This is one of my most favorite series of all time. Truly it is. Rodewald is a master at what she does. Spiritually impactful seems a mediocre way to describe it, but it is stunning. I very highly recommend not only this book, but this entire series. They are destined to be read over and over again. They will enrich your walk with Christ. Well done!

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. I also bought a copy because it was that important.

‘The Sisters of Sea View’ (On Devonshire Shores, Book # 1) by Julie Klassen

About The Book
Some guests have come for a holiday, others for hidden reasons of their own . . .

When their father’s death leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers and her genteel sisters fear they will be forced to sell the house and separate to earn livelihoods as governesses or companions. Determined to stay together, Sarah convinces them to open their seaside home to guests to make ends meet and provide for their ailing mother. Instead of the elderly invalids they expect to receive, however, they find themselves hosting eligible gentlemen. Sarah is soon torn between a growing attraction to a mysterious Scottish widower and duty to her family.

Viola Summers wears a veil to cover her scar. When forced to choose between helping in her family’s new guest house and earning money to hire a maid to do her share, she chooses the latter. She reluctantly agrees to read to some of Sidmouth’s many invalids, preferring the company of a few elders with failing eyesight to the fashionable guests staying in their home. But when her first client turns out to be a wounded officer in his thirties, Viola soon wishes she had chosen differently. Her new situation exposes her scars–both visible and those hidden deep within–and her cloistered heart will never be the same.

Join the Summers sisters on the Devonshire coast, where they discover the power of friendship, loyalty, love, and new beginnings.

My Rating: 4 Stars!
I have been a fan of Julie Klassen since I read her very first book, which remains on my shelves to this day, having been read twice. I love a good Regency, and Klassen does this genre incredibly well. She is so adept at forming bonds between her characters and digging deep into their lives and relationships.

This series started well and promises to be so very good. I really enjoyed spending time with this family and their lodgers. I can’t wait to see what happens with each sister. Well done!

‘Stay With Me’ (Waters of Time) by Jody Hedlund

About The Book
Sacrificing and dying to oneself is costly.
But doing so brings new purpose and joy.

As a private investigator, Sybil Huxham has seen her fair share of strange occurrences. But nothing in her career has been more perplexing than the miracles she’s witnessed as a result of people drinking ancient holy water. When she discovers more of the rare holy water, she experiences strange overlaps with a nobleman in the Middle Ages who is languishing in a dungeon, accused of treason and condemned to die. To save his life, she finally crosses to the past completely.

Nicholas Worth has never met a woman quite like Sybil, and as the two run for their lives into the Weald, they find refuge among a community of outlaws. With both their reputations on the line, they have little choice but to marry. As they get to know each other, an undeniable attraction develops. But danger and disease chase after them, drawing ever closer. Will they be able to escape the threats? And will Sybil choose to stay with Nicholas in the past, or will she be ripped apart from him forever?

‘God uses trials and hardships to mature us in ways nothing else can.’

Jody Hedlund’s Waters of Time series has been so fascinating and wonderful to read. These stories, which are time-crossing, have captivated me from the very beginning. All feature the element of holy water, believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life.

Set-in present-day England and in the medieval era of the late fourteenth century, these books are amazing to read as we watch characters travel back and forth from one time period to another. I eagerly looked forward to each one. And there will be another! Jody Hedlund has been a favorite of mine for many years and her historical books are awesome!

‘All She Ever Dreamed’ by Robin Lee Hatcher

About The Book
A dream sometimes comes at great cost.
Betrothed in a sensible match, even if the man isn’t the love she’s always imagined, Sarah McNeal relies on the advice her late grandmother gave as well as her own common sense. Dreams of a mysterious European count who rides in and sweeps her off her feet arethe stuff of girlhood. And she’s a woman now. But when her fiancé’s older brother, Jeremiah, returns to Boulder Creek, he unknowingly awakens that discarded dream.
Nine years ago, Jeremiah West lost his wife and newborn son in an epidemic, and he’s been wandering ever since. A survivor of the Spanish-American War, he finally returns to Boulder Creek to settle on the farm he inherited from his father, an inheritance his younger brother still begrudges.
When a blizzard threatens Sarah’s life—and her reputation—Jeremiah is there to rescue her. But the pain of his past remains a stumbling block. Then fate brings Jeremiah and Sarah to a crossroads, and love demands a decision that will change the course of their lives.

‘I reckon we haven’t talked much lately, Lord. Maybe it’s time we did.’

I’ve been reading Robin Lee Hatcher’s work a very long time, and I am a big fan. She gives us an historical Christian fiction novel here, set in 1898, and it’s very good. Sometimes things you think are God’s will actually aren’t and he places the right thing in your path. Then you must have the courage to take that path. Well written with good characters and a good plot, this one is a keeper. Recommended.

‘At this point, her mother would have dropped to her knees and prayed. No way would Nora waste time with that. Prayers were for people who needed saving. Nora intended to do the saving herself.’

Boy, this one ticks all the boxes for a suspense lover like myself. Mentink hits the ground running with an action-packed story and continues throughout the book. Her characters are well developed and the plot a good one. It was good to see friends from previous books in the series also. I read it in a day! Well done!

Mindy Obenhaus has graciously consented to giving a guest post here on my blog AND she will be giving away a copy of A Christmas Bargain. Read on for how to enter.

A Dream in the Making
by Mindy Obenhaus

Has God ever given you a dream? A desire for something you had no idea how to achieve. Or you might know, but the steps involved seem insurmountable.

In my new release, A Christmas Bargain, Annalise Grant longs for her independence. To prove to others that she’s capable of standing on her own two feet and achieving her dreams. So when she inherits a Christmas tree farm from her deceased husband’s uncle, she’s convinced it’s God’s way of fulfilling her dream. Until she’s faced with the amount of work it’ll take to bring that dream to fruition. And as she trusts in her own abilities instead of God’s provision, her confidence is shaken, and she begins to buy into the opinions of others.

Dreams rarely come true overnight. They often require a lot of hard work, whether physical, mental or simply time-consuming. I firmly believe that my dream of becoming a writer was planted by God. I can say this with ninety-nine percent certainty because I was never a reader. My mom was an avid reader, but I thought reading was boring. Something I had to do for school. Later, as a busy mom of five, I had no time. Magazines were my preference because they had pictures. Nonetheless, I always had a very active imagination and would create fictitious scenarios in my head.

Then my mom came to live with us—and brought all of her books. As I sorted through them, hoping to get rid of as many as possible, I was intrigued by some of the covers. So I’d read the back cover and the first page. Guess who suddenly became an avid reader? The next thing I knew, I was contemplating those stories in my head and wondering, “Could I write a book?”

Soon, that question turned into a dream, and I felt God calling me to write for Him. That was in 2006. I didn’t receive my first book contract until 2013. Just because God called me to write, didn’t mean I was going to be published overnight, or that I’d ever be published at all. But I remained obedient to that calling. The years between that seed being planted and publication were filled with a lot of hard work. Failures and disappointments. I had to learn the craft of writing and get to know the industry. And I had to trust that God had set me on that path for a reason. Reasons I may never know.

I believe God instills dreams in all of us to draw us closer to Him. To teach us to rely on Him throughout the journey. To plant those markers in our lives that we can look back on when times get tough and remind ourselves that He is always with us and will never forsake us.

Has God given you a dream? If so, did you brush it off, thinking it fanciful or difficult? Or did you accept His offer to journey with Him down a new path?

‘Were there really this many evil people in the world?’

‘Like The Wind’ by Robin Lee Hatcher

About The Book
A life in pieces. A hundred-year-old journal. And a chance for love to be reborn.
Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs alone—with no job, no home, and no money—after her manipulative ex-husband used his power and wealth to destroy everything. Six years later, the peaceful life she rebuilt is once again turned upside down when she learns that her fifteen-year-old daughter, Emma, will be coming to live with her. The reunion should be a dream come true, but years of deception have driven a wedge between them. And Emma seems more interested in an old diary she discovered than reconciliation with her mother.
Tyler Murphy knows what it’s like to lose everything. Propelled by his history in the foster-care system, he’s determined to root out dishonesty and protect the most vulnerable through his work as an investigator. When he’s hired to investigate Olivia Ward, though, he finds himself longing to believe she’s exactly who she appears to be, and he soon realizes that his desire to learn more about her has nothing to do with his job. But how can he pursue a relationship that began with a lie?
In this latest novel from award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher, an antique diary, a family-fueled investigation, and unexpected feelings collide to create a promise that’s worth fighting for.

‘The Blackout Book Club’ by Amy Lynn Green

About The Book
“A salute to the power of books and of friendship!”–SARAH SUNDIN, bestselling and award-winning author of Until Leaves Fall in Paris

“The Blackout Book Club is an engaging story that illustrates the power of books to unite and encourage us in trying times. . . . A wonderful read.”–LYNN AUSTIN, author of Long Way Home

In 1942, an impulsive promise to her brother before he goes off to the European front puts Avis Montgomery in the unlikely position of head librarian in small-town Maine. Though she has never been much of a reader, when wartime needs threaten to close the library, she invents a book club to keep its doors open. The women she convinces to attend the first meeting couldn’t be more different–a wealthy spinster determined to aid the war effort, an exhausted mother looking for a fresh start, and a determined young war worker.

At first, the struggles of the home front are all the club members have in common, but over time, the books they choose become more than an escape from the hardships of life and the fear of the U-boat battles that rage just past their shores. As the women face personal challenges and band together in the face of danger, they find they have more in common than they think. But when their growing friendships are tested by secrets of the past and present, they must decide whether depending on each other is worth the cost.

Includes a book club discussion guide and The Blackout Book Club book list

My Rating: 4 Stars
I am a reader. Always have been. I’ve loved reading since I knew what reading was. And I treasure books. Here, in this story, books are integral to the story. Amy Lynn Green sets the stage with her plot, taking place in the early months of World War II in a small town in Maine.

Avis Montgomery starts a book club as a way to help women take their minds off their troubles during this dreary time, with black outs and U boats off the coast. The women who are a part of the club are very different, but they bind together with the books and the challenges facing them during this war. Green digs deep and brings out this period of history very well. I love plopping myself down right into the middle of the book I’m reading and it’s easy when you read a well-done book.
