‘The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip’ by Sara Brunsvold

About The Book
Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she’s been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In her eagerness, she pushes too hard, earning herself the menial task of writing an obituary for an unremarkable woman who’s just entered hospice care.

But there’s more to Clara Kip than meets the eye. The spirited septuagenarian may be dying, but she’s not quite ready to cash it in yet. Never one to shy away from an assignment herself, she can see that God brought the young reporter into her life for a reason. And if it’s a story Aidyn Kelley wants, that’s just what Mrs. Kip will give her–but she’s going to have to work for it.

Debut author Sara Brunsvold delights with this emotional multigenerational story that shows that the very best life is made up of thousands of little deaths to self. You’ll want to be just like Mrs. Kip when you grow up!

My Rating:
3.5 Stars
3.5
A reporter looking for a serious assignment meets up with a dying patient in hospice. What she thinks is a terrible idea turns into a life changing assignment. How can writing and obituary for an ordinary woman help her career? Maybe it was meant for more than that.

Sometimes we should pay attention to every single person around us. Even those we think will have not one bit of beating in our lives. An unlikely friendship story that will bring some tears to your eyes.

‘How many people were going to die before this ended?’

I’ve been a fan of Dani Pettrey’s work since her first book years ago. They sit proudly on my shelves. This one is no exception to her action-packed suspense. The Coastal Guardians is a great series and I love it.

Join this amazing team as they try to stop a madman with a stolen weapon that could cause tremendous destruction if they don’t catch him first. There is a mass shooting that devastates the team, but it’s only the beginning of the havoc that falls in the wake of this diabolical maniac.

Pettrey deftly adds layers all along that serve to constantly bring more intrigue to the reader. The personal stories of those involved are great to watch as well. They struggle with real problems just like the rest of us, and they’ve allowed God into their lives and have His help with those problems. We also get a great secondary story as well as see old friends making an appearance. Very well done!

Mary Connealy has been a favorite of mine for many years. Her cowboy comedies are hilarious and I know I am in for a great good time when I read one of her books. This series is really good. An evil stepfather sells his wife’s daughters to men who really are creepy just so he can gain complete control over their dead father’s business and fortune. Only these girls, educated and super smart, are having none of it! Here is Michelle’s story and it’s a good one, too! The first daughter is married, then Michelle marries Zane, but the bad guys keep coming. Tune in to find out. It’s good! I promise.

‘Walking In Tall Weeds’ by Robin W. Pearson

About The Book
From award-winning author Robin W. Pearson comes a new Southern family drama about one family who discovers their history is only skin-deep and that God’s love is the only family tie that binds.

Paulette and Fred Baldwin find themselves wading through a new season of life in Hickory Grove, North Carolina. Their only son, McKinley, now works hundreds of miles away, and the distance between the husband and wife feels even farther. When their son returns home, his visit dredges up even more conflict between Fred and Paulette.

McKinley makes it no secret that he doesn’t intend to follow in his father’s footsteps at George & Company Fine Furnishings or otherwise. Fred can’t quite bring himself to accept all his son’s choices, yet Paulette is determined McKinley will want for nothing, least of all a mother’s love and attention—which her own skin color cost her as a child. But all her striving leaves Fred on the outside looking in.

Paulette suspects McKinley and Fred are hiding something that could change the whole family. Soon, she’s facing a whirlwind she never saw coming, and the three of them must dig deep to confront the truth. Maybe then they’ll discover that their history is only skin-deep while their faith can take them right to the heart of things.

‘Prayin’ is where we admit we ain’t the lord of our own lives.’

Where do I begin to leave a review adequate enough to convey my thoughts on what a powerful story this was? Pepper Basham is always good; I’ve never read a bad book by her, or even a mediocre one. But this. This wonderful story of the Appalachian people in the time period immediately after the Great War is so full of grace, forgiveness, and the mercies of God, that I found myself crying through parts of it, gasping at others, laughing some, too.

The story takes place in Maple Springs where Basham set another book earlier and this one features some of the same folks but can totally be read as a stand alone. It was so good to read how these folks lived, their way of life, their superstitions and love. There were times the reading hurt, because people don’t always do the right thing, but Basham handles it so well.

The hero of this story, Jebediah McAdams, is perfect. I totally fell in love with his sweet heart and concern for others. And I loved his ‘itchin’ lips’. You’ll have to read the story to get that one. I promise you’ll like it, too. Jeb is totally unprepared for the English woman who literally falls into his arms when she runs away from home to escape an arranged marriage. And Cora is determined to be a help to these precious people as ‘Nurse Woman’. Having served at the Front during the Great War, she is sure she can provide help to them. IF she can get these backward and leery folk to trust her.

Set in a simpler time in a beautiful place, this story will stay with you long after you read the last word. It will be a treasure for any keeper shelf. I know it will mine. Basham’s descriptions of the mountains will have you longing to see them for yourself. This was a powerfully moving book and I adored every minute. It’s the kind of book that, when you read the last word, you want to flip to the beginning and start over again. It’s that good. Well done!

My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review and the opinion expressed here is entirely my own.

My Rating: 5 Stars!
‘Lizzie, you need to start trusting God again. He is listening to your prayers, I promise. ‘

This book was simply amazing. For a suspense lover, it ticked all the boxes and then some. Lynette Eason and Sami Abrams have definitely excelled at giving me a most excellent read. We are taken back on a visit to Eason’s Elite Guardians and what a great group of folks it is. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with them so much.

Charlie Lee has been injured badly on an undercover assignment and loses the memory of his last four years. He has forgotten that he intends to keep Lizzie Tremaine at arm’s length. Both Charlie and Lizzie have issues that need to be worked out and just maybe this bit of amnesia can work in their favor. But first, they have to get past bad guys trying to kill them.

‘God, help me. Words refused to come. He had no idea what he needed, just that life seemed beyond his capabilities to death with at the moment.’

Take a wild, action-packed ride as Eason and Abrams take us spiraling into one of the most suspenseful stories ever! And even more impactful is the wonderful spiritual themes incorporated into the book. This one is for the keeper shelf, destined to be reread. Well done!

Review: ‘Her Darkest Secret’ by Jessica R. Patch

About The Book
When a cold-case serial killer returns, FBI special agent Fiona Kelly has one last chance to stop him before he claims the prize he’s always wanted—her.

The sight of a goose feather at a murder scene modeled after a children’s poem is enough to make FBI special agent Fiona Kelly’s blood turn to ice. Almost two decades ago, a feather was left with her sister’s body—and with every subsequent victim of the Nursery Rhyme Killer. Now he’s back. Only this time, his latest gruesome murder is a message to the only one who ever got away: Fiona.

Finding “Rhyme” is an obsession that’s fueled Fiona’s career—and destroyed her marriage to fellow FBI agent Asa Kodiak. Now Fiona and Asa have to put their past tensions aside and work together one last time. But Rhyme is watching and catching this killer may force Fiona to reveal her biggest, darkest secret…the one only he knows.

5 Stars!

‘She’d been learning to think like a killer much longer than her career with the FBI.’

This book is so worthy of more than the allowable 5 stars. From the prologue, the book is absolutely
un-put-downable! I have been a Jessica Patch fan since I read her first book. I’ve read all of hers, some of them twice, and I’ve never tired of them one bit. With this one, however, Patch’s talent has only grown, and greatly. In fact, I was astounded at how great it was! I was captivated from page one, and it never wavered.

Patch has created characters that seem to just leap off the page and into the reader’s mind. And their emotions practically ping into your heart. One such scene was so intense, it had my heart hurting for them. Never have I seen such raw emotion from a book character. This writing is brilliant and crazy good!

‘The killer had declared war. Asa would give him the fight of his life and hope it was enough.’

Patch has created an insanely bad villain. The story is gritty, chilling and so frightening. I found myself gasping numerous times during the reading. Patch ratchets up the suspense all along and races toward an ending no one will envision. No one! I was completely taken by surprise by it. She manages to weave everything together perfectly to write the very best suspense novel I’ve ever read. Bar none.

I especially enjoyed how Patch has the FBI team operating so seamlessly. The secondary characters are also very real to this reader. This is WAY better than any crime show. Hands down.

‘God had proven once again that Fiona wasn’t worth listening to.’

Let me also mention that the spiritual thread, while subtle, was very powerful indeed. I loved how the author ties this in with the horrific things that happen in this book. One reviewer called it a taut psychological thriller and I completely agree. Taut and intense are two adjectives that describe it perfectly. I am so looking forward to more books in this series. Bravo! Well done!

My thanks to Love Inspired Publishers for a copy of this book via the Net Galley platform. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.

‘I feel like I’m in a nightmare I can’t wake up from.’

Jessica R. Patch is a huge favorite of mine and I never miss her books. They are all on my shelves and some I’ve read more than once. She is a master at inspirational romantic suspense. She has a mind that thinks up great plots and characters and great bad guys. If you can call a bad guy great, that is.

Here she has created characters that just absolutely leap off the page. Agent Duke Jericho was one and he was super cool! I loved him from the minute he walked onto the page and into my heart. This story was so good, too. A cold case crime where the killer decides he needs to up his game and begins again and the clues are few and far between. But there is a new wrinkle in the case, one that is threatening the woman trying to solve the crime, police officer and artist Brigitte Linsey. Can they solve the crime before the killer takes his ultimate victim? Will Duke and Brigitte let God paint their story? (Pun intended) I loved this story so much. I always eagerly anticipate Patch’s next book. I highly recommend her work. Well done!
